I came across this recent and interesting webinar by Sheel Mohnot of 500 Startups, on trends in Fintech; a must watch for those new to the topic. It describes the various sub categories of the sector, what drives them, and offers some really good insights into customer behaviour and the dynamics between innovating startups and the incumbents of the finance sector.

Sheel Mohnot describes ten categories of Fintech businesses where innovation from Fintech startups can either disrupt or enable incumbents, namely:

• Regtech,
• Personal finance,
• Payments/billing,
• Insurance,
• Capital markets,
• Wealth management,
• Money transfer/ Remittances,
• Mortgage/ Real Estate.

He addresses a number of key questions, such as how tech companies are disrupting the trust-based relation between traditional banks and customers, and whether finance incumbents will be able to get Innovation faster than startups get distribution models.
